Ryan Ransley: Meet the Main Character

This burst of cooler weather reminds me of days running around the school playground. Most of the boys, split between soccer games and climbing across the monkey bars. Ryan Ransley, the main character of my first complete novel that we’ll call Project Raincloud, falls into the first group. Of course, there’s a lot more to Ryan than sliding across the grass. Welcome to the first installment of Meet the Main Character!

Ryan Ransley

Personality

Ryan’s strategic brain elevates him to be one of the most athletic kids in his third grade class. When his quick feet race around the other team and score a goal, Ryan has to tell his family. Like most eight year olds, he sees his own wants and abilities before he recognizes others’. Despite his youthful tunnel vision, Ryan feels deeply and already shows a compassionate heart for those around him.

Competition comes naturally to Ryan. He rarely fails when he wants to put forth effort. School, however, does not entice his efforts. I imagine that has something to do with his mousy teacher, Mrs. Derby. When the right challenge comes along, he’s quick to provide solutions. Ryan’s loyalty and budding compassion endears him to adults and kids alike.

Relationships

Ryan and Rebecca have always been close. Rebecca may prefer art while Ryan prefers sports, but the siblings still spent plenty of time together. When a raincloud pops out of the sky and attaches itself to Rebecca, Ryan is the first to start screaming for help.

Ryan’s two best friends are Garrett and Jack Andrew. In fact, the trio rarely separated until Jack Andrew’s move this past summer. All the boys in third grade have to adjust to Jack Andrew’s absence. Boys, though, rearrange their sports teams and keep on trucking. The fifth grade girls cause Ryan greater concern as Rebecca loses her best friend in Jack Andrew’s sister. Thankfully, Garrett never backs down from a challenge, and he’s happy to call out the bullies while Ryan takes care of the wounded.

Behind Ryan Ransley

My brother inspired the main character of this raincloud story. His wit, compassion, and strength never fail to make me feel better when I am down. We may have had different interests, but my favorite childhood memories still include him. Even when we disagree, I never doubt that he’s one of my best and truest friends. I’m blessed to have him as a brother.
